A Cowboy Town in the Old West

Posted by Hamish Tear on Tuesday, December 04, 2007

Jackson sits in a low-lying valley (Jackson Hole) amid the towering mountains of the Tetons (The Grand Teton soars 6,000ft. over the valley floor). It was founded originally by farmers and trappers, Indian traders and mountain men. From those humble beginnings, it has become one of the most sought-out places to live in the USA. Small wonder. The entire area is just spectacular in its abundance of rugged, mountainous beauty. The Snake River, an iconic Western river, has its headwaters in the Tetons and 'snakes' its way through the valley before entering Idaho where it passes by the Tetons on their Western flank in Idaho - on its way to join the Columbia River. Jackson is an interesting juxtaposition of cowboys (the ranching lifestyle) and fine art galleries (the fine lifestyle).

Rocky Mountains - Backbone of a nation

Recreational opportunities abound in these mountains. From major expeditionary mountaineering, to more relaxing river activities such as floating or fly-fishing. Skiing, mountain-biking, wildlife watching and more have all made the Rocky mountains a vacation destination for many. Fabulous resorts have thus grown up in these regions, and with them, even more activities to enjoy in the (usually) fine but vigorous weather environments. The valleys have become equally as important as the mountains and people enjoy tennis, golf, hiking, theater, and fine shopping in areas such as Jackson Hole, Teton Valley, Vail and Aspen.
