Sorrento: Small Town Italy

Most tourists to Italy think only of visiting the most famous locations in this Mediterranean nation. While Rome, Venice, and Florence are certainly well worth any vacationer's time, there remains a lot to be said for some of the smaller towns that dot the Italian countryside. One such town is Sorrento.

Situated in southern Italy, Sorrento is a small town in the Campania region. Despite its size of fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, the town attracts tourists year-found who flock there from Naples and Pompeii, both of which provide easy access to Sorrento. Views from the town include the Bay of Naples, the city beyond, the Isle of Capri where the emperor Tiberius is reputed to have maintained a decadent pleasure-palace, and Mt. Vesuvius.

This last sight is perhaps the most famous of all, Vesuvius being the volcano responsible for the destruction of the Roman town of Pompeii in the first century A.D. Since the eruption buried Pompeii and preserved it intact, holidaymakers staying in vacation rentals in Sorrento can easily arrange a day-trip to the foot of Mt. Vesuvius, where they can get a firsthand view of life during the early Roman Empire.

Sorrento has long been a vacation resort popular with notable Italian opera giants, including Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti. While there, be sure to ask for a drink of limoncello, a digestive liqueur made from lemon rinds, water, sugar, and alcohol. One of the best times to visit is during Holy Week as Sorrento offers several religious processions at this time.
