Nature Attractions Abound in Corolla

The word "Corolla" may call to mind a car of that name, but did you know that it also refers to a popular tourist destination in North Carolina? Located in the Poplar Branch township of Currituck County, Corolla is not so much a city as a settlement. With only about 500 people, the town is a close-knit community that knows how to welcome visitors so well that every summer when vacation season rolls around, thousands of people flock to Corolla.

Corolla is well loved by vacationers for several reasons; one of them is the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. One of only seven lighthouses located along the North Carolina coast, the lighthouse provides guidance for ships at sea navigating the nearby northern Outer Banks. Another attraction is the herd of over 100 feral Banker horses that live on a 12,000-acre animal preserve just to the north of the town.

Tourists staying in vacation homes in Corolla will also want to take advantage of the many other parks and nature preserves in the area. Currituck Heritage Park in Corolla, for example, hosts the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, which provides a boardwalk so that guests can explore the wetlands without getting their shoes and legs mucky. At least 80 species of bird inhabit the park. A short distance away, tourists can visit the Currituck Banks North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve. Here, visitors can learn about the unique ecosystems that make up the small creeks and eddies along the North Carolina coast.
