"Joshua Tree" is a phrase that will be familiar to any fan of the world-renowned musical group U2, but what few people realize is that Joshua Tree is also a small town located in the inland desert of southern California. Vacation homes in Joshua Tree allow visitors to stay amidst some of the most beautiful natural scenery in this portion of the desert for it is here that the native species of the Joshua tree grows in large numbers.

A Joshua tree is a desert plant with prickly leaves and an iconic profile. The plants flourish all over the town of Joshua Tree and the desert wilderness beyond, with thick stands of them represented in the area's Joshua Tree National Park, due to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2011.

Spring is one of the best times to visit both the town and its national park. It is in early March when wildflower season first begins each year. Huge and colorful stands of flowers spring up all over the desert, particularly in years when there has been heavy winter rainfall. It is also in spring that birdwatchers can enjoy the first arrivals of species that come to the area to nest for the summer, as well as the arrival of new chicks for species native to the area.

Winter is another good time to visit, as temperatures during the daytime are usually moderate rather than cold.
