Borrego Springs is a small community located in the inland portion of San Diego County, California, and is rather unique because it is completely encircled by the Anza Borrego State Park. This natural desert park is in fact the biggest California State Park to date. Many inhabitants of the area live here only part of the year, leasing or renting out their residences to serve as vacation homes in Borrego Springs for the remaining months.
For a small town, Borrego Springs has impressive amenities for tourists including two shopping malls as well as a number of different restaurants and small stores selling eclectic merchandise, much of it handmade arts and crafts. For all this, however, the town has not a single stop light to mar the natural ambiance of the desert environment.
Stargazing in Borrego Springs
Night lighting is sparse in Borrego Springs in order to keep the area as dark as possible at night. This fact, combined with the fact that the area is far removed from any major freeways or cities, means that the night sky over Borrego Springs is dusted with brilliant stars, many more stars than city dwellers sometimes realize even exist. Stargazing is a popular activity with tourists, as is hiking in the nearby state park.
The community celebrates a local event every October: the Borrego Days Desert Festival. The heart of this festival is located at "Christmas Circle, which is a traffic circle located between the town and the small airport that serves it.
