Whatever your reason for visiting Chicago, The Altgeld House Apartments offer a perfect starting point for exploring the city. We are ideally located on a quiet street in downtown Chicago's most upscale neighborhood. Many city attractions are 1/2 to 8 blocks right outside our door -- theatres, movies, restaurants, cafes, fine shops, music venues, museums, the free city zoo and botanial gardens, free tennis courts, comedy clubs, parks, playgrounds (one out back!), the lake/beach, organic farmers' markets, DePaul University, day spas and even three Starbucks :-). Wrigley Field is a 10-block walk right up the street.
For necessities, Altgeld House is one block or less from the post office, the library, DePaul University, and a late-night pharmacy -- and for any jet-lag a 24-hour grocery and a 24-hour restaurant.
For transportation, we are one mile from the expressway or Lakeshore Drive and just one block or less from the subway/el, abundant taxicabs, free summer trolley and several buses to reach easily all the rest of the city's attractions. The heart of the Loop is exactly two miles; Michigan Avenue shops are one mile.
This 1891 home has a back yard, sundeck with umbrella table, and a covered verandah with rockers. The spacious apartments both are furnished with 19th century European and American antiques and fine reproductions and then finished with 21st century amenities including air conditioning and ceiling fans, high-speed Internet and WiFi.
Elizabeth's Place is a large apartment with a living room with television and VCR player, a formal diningroom which seats twelve, book-filled study with stereo, bathroom with clawfoot tub and shower, and a large eat-in kitchen with all first-rate appliances -- Dacor oven, Fisher Paykel dishwasher, SubZero refrigerator, and Corian counters and sink. One bedroom offers a queen bed, the other has a full-sized antique 1840s bed and the study has a single bed to sleep five.
Alice's Annex, our garden-level apartment, has a livingroom, book-filled study, dining nook, small kitchen, seating area with television and VCR player, large bedroom with a stereo with in-wall speakers, bathroom with tub and shower, private entrance and even a complimentary front-loading washer and dryer. For sleeping, the bedroom has a queen bed and the livingroom has a queen sleeper sofa and a single bed in a sleeping alcove off the livingroom. We can add another single bed to sleep six. This might be your choice if you are traveling with very young children as it's the closest we have to *child-friendly.* :-)
Elizabeth's and Alice's share a connectiong door, which we unlock for large parties in order to create one huge apartment for a large group.
Kristina's Suite is a private area within our unit with a privare entrance. The bedroom has a full-sized bed, a desk, and a television. The newly remodeled private bathroom includes a deep soaking tub and shower and custom antique vanity. There is a formal dining nook overlooking the back yard. You should know, however, that we have a declawed cat who will come into Kristina's kitchen or bathroom (but not into the bedroom --that door may be kept shut) so this would only be for guests not allergic.
All stays include local phone calls, a 24-hour light breakfast, and daily maid service. Street parking is included with your stay.
Extras such as a custom Saturday breakfast (highly recommended and a terrific bargain at just $15!), a dinner or cooking class may be arranged with one of our personal chefs in Elizabeth's Place.
Please note that we allow NO smoking in our properties, although smokers may use the porch or sundeck.
