Brambly Hedge Cottage is situated on the hedge of Gunflint Lake in the middle of Cortes Island. It is a small size lake connected through an estuary to the bigger Hague Lake. Together they form the “fresh water pearls of Cortes Island”. The sunlight hours are long as we enjoy a western exposure.
The cottage is easily accessible by the main road and there is ample parking close to it. We live on the main house of the property year round and we enjoy sharing it with visitors from far and wide, some of them have become good friends and return regularly to rekindle great summer memories.
Swimming in the lake is accessible through our own dock. The water is warm and clear and a great summer delight for children and adults alike. Feel free to bring your kayak, canoe or row boat (and other water toys) to enjoy exploring this quiet (no power boats allowed) body of water right at your door step [watercraft shown in photos are not included in the rental]. The island offers great biking fun as well.
Protection and stewardship of the environment is taken most seriously on this island.
To do our part we have tried to keep the grounds as close to natural as possible, especially close to the water. There is a great deal of wild life milling about, some forms are harder to see than others, but none the less they are here and are an important element in our property. We have barn and violet green swallows living with us and tadpoles and tree frogs as well.
The tall shore vegetation is there to protect and attract other birds and water fowl to this habitat. There are otters and beavers showing up once in a while as well. In the grass there are some snakes, they are armless garden snakes, even so you may want to wear shoes when you venture in the wild part of the property. Deer come in regularly, especially in the evening. At times you may meet our sheep grazing in the meadow. We are part of a co-op with our neighbours and occasionally the sheep need to come here for a bit of fresh grass. They are armless and used to interact with people but we suggest that children be respectful of the animals by keeping a safe distance.
Unfortunately, Brambly Hedge is not accessible to people with limited mobility.
*bed linens and towels are supplied; renters must bring own beach towels
BC Ferries reservations are recommended
Facilities:
Construction on Brambly Hedge was completed 2010. It offers accommodation for a maximum of 5 people, great for small families or 2 couples. As the water is easily accessible we advise small children be supervised at all times.
The kitchen/dining and living room is well appointed, comfortable and relaxing. The cabinets are new. There is a fridge/freezer combination, dish washer, microwave, electric cook stove top and over the counter convection oven.
There is a TV and reception is via satellite. We have WIFI and a phone for local calls, cell phone reception can be spotty at the cottage but there are clear receptions zones on the property.
There is one bathroom equipped with a generous size shower and new washer/dryer combination for your convenience.
For the “barby” enthusiast we have a gas barbeque and a front covered deck to snuggle in with a book and a glass of wine to finish off the day.
We also have a wood burning stove for off season cooler days. Use of it can be arranged.
Drinking water comes from a well and we are on a septic system. We have a filtering system in the kitchen. The water is government tested and has proven safe.
Sleeping:
There are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen size bed, the second with a bunk bed: double on the bottom and single on top.
There is a queen pull out in the living room. The top occupancy of 7 would only be considered for short stays.
Other amenities:
Our property is about 3 acres in size. Some of the area is fenced off for protection against the voracious deer and sheep, but guests are free to use the flower garden and move about the property.
We have a badminton set and even a tree house for children to enjoy. In the evening guest can enjoy some board games and books for adults and children alike.
In the area:
We are located about 2 Km. from Manson''s Landing; the centre of the island. On Cortes there are several restaurants:
The co-op café
the Float house
The Cove
Hollyhock (vegetarian)
the Cortes Island Café and Trude''s.
In the summer there is a fast food shack on the parking lot of Cortes Island Market.
The hub of the island is Manson''s Hall on Sutil point Rd. and notices are posted there.
Dances are held often in the Summer.
The Hall has a post office. It is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and has wireless access.
There is also the Cortes Island café, open for lunch on the same schedule.
Local information flyers can be picked up at the post office and they come out every Friday.
Videos and DVD''s can be rented from the Cortes Island Market and from Squirrel Cove Market.
There is also a public library that is part of the Vancouver Island Regional system. It is open on Monday/ Wednesday/ Fridays 1:00 to 4:00. Due to recent developments, the location has yet to be finalized.
GALLERIES:
Several local artists show their art in galleries and studios across the island. The Old School House Gallery has temporary exhibits especially in the Summer time. Off island musicians also visit our shores and give great concerts from time to time.
SWIMMING:
Both, Gunflint Lake and Hague lake are a source of drinking water for some of the neighbours, no bathing in the lake. Sandy Beach provincial day park is a one and half kilometers away (on our left) and is well marked. Parking is available on the right of Seaford Rd. This is a beautiful, public, sandy beach with a shallow water approach to the lake. There is a clothes optional area as well. The parking lot is on the left, just passed the little bridge on Seaford. Rd.
FISHING:
fishing licences are available at the Cortes Island Market. There are many trout in the lake. This is a catch and release area. You need a licence to collect oysters and clams on the beaches as well.
HIKING:
Kwas Park across the lake has a great network of trails for you to explore. The network start across the street from the Motel (on the left as you exit onto Seaford Rd.) there are more hikes through Linnaea Farm (on the right) and they can lead you to Easter Bluff. This is a more challenging hike.
