Approached along a 300 metre track through 12 acres of private rainforest, Yamacutta is in a commanding position at the head of a tranquil 5 acre clearing. There are excellent views from all rooms down over our tropical fruit orchard to Mount Mackay.

In this totally private setting a rich variety of wildlife wanders freely amongst Tahitian Limes, Lemonade & Lemon trees, Rambutans, Indonesian Guavas, Starfruit, Pomelos, Mango & Soursop, meandering in and out of the native forest habitat.

Relax on the shady verandah in total peace. Watch for wallabies and the rare protected Southern Cassowaries which frequent the garden. In complete privacy behind the house you can enjoy total relaxation in our stunning “lagoon-style” Rainforest pool or sit in the cool of the thatched Balinese Shadehouse.

It's the perfect place to escape, unwind, relax, refresh your mind and body, re-discover yourself away from life’s pressures.

The daytime air is full of birdsong ~ Lorikeets, Pittas, Wompoo doves. The night time comes alive with choruses of cigadas, frogs, owls, scrub fowl, cat-birds. A clear night sky can be spectacular.

A paradise for naturalists & naturists, artists & photgraphers, Yamacutta is also a great base for touring, whilst a huge range of activities are within easy reach for those wanting more energetic pursuits.

South Mission Beach is just 6 minutes away. It is friendly, unsophisticated & undiscovered but with a simple charm ~ shops for everyday needs, boutiques, numerous relaxed cafés and restaurants. Its jewel is the 13 kilometres of near-deserted palm-fringed beach with stunning views to nearby Dunk, Bedarra and Hinchinbrook Islands.

Mission Beach is the closest mainland point to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world's wonders. Don't miss taking a day trip to the Reef for snorkelling or Scuba-diving - (PADI qualified instructors on board.)

Accommodation
Yamacutta Lodge is unique . Modelled on the traditional timber "Pole Home", constructed using local and imported hardwoods like spotted Gum, Australian red Cedar and Tasmanian Oak, it incorporates modern elements too.

High ceilings and full height sliding glass doors to all rooms maximise the light and sense of space. Lots of large glassless timber louvres to the side and rear elevations give you the sense that you are really part of the Rainforest and maintain a through breeze.
Being arrow-shaped with an angled front elevation, rooms have greater privacy and it makes for interesting shapes. The internal scheme and furnishings echo the natural colours and textures of the rainforest with rich browns and subtle greys and greens. En-suite wetrooms have pebble floors and overhead "sunburst " showers ~ a reminder that the coast and reef are not far away. This is not pretentious ~ it simply makes for a calming atmosphere!..

"Yamacutta" means "beautiful reef - haven of peace".........this is what we have tried to create. Yamacutta is also the name of a nearby beautiful reef which happens to be in direct line with South Mission Beach and the property.

Here you can wake up to a swim before breakfast and plan your day .
Or sit in the pool with a drink and chat to friends or family as you catch the last of the sun's rays in the cool of the late afternoon. The thatched Balinese Shadehouse provides a cool breezy refuge to read the paper or enjoy a coffee. There is a shower, beach entry & underwater seating. Grounds
The area around the house and pool is planted with a variety of flowering and scented shrubs, attracting butterflies and birds. You will find vanilla plant, poincianas, white ginger; also small native species such as bromeliads, cordylines, rhoeos and ferns. There are also smaller palms such as the Foxtail Palm, Christmas Palm, Bottle Palm and Licuala. Hard landscaping is with natural materials ~ rocks, rock walls, timber & gravel steps.Lower in the clearing you can wander through the tropical fruit orchard ~ according to season you may see Rambutans, Limes, Lemonades, Soursop,Starfruit, Pomelos and others.
Remember that you share the garden with the rainforest wildlife ~ there are no fences (except around the pool) so wildlife is free to wander in and out. If you're feeling adventurous, you can delve into the edge of the cool, dark rainforest yourself.... we plan to make some short walking tracks soon.
As well as the obvious vines and trees, look closely and you may find a fascinating array of fungi, green ants, scrub fowl, spiders, goannas.. the list is endless.
Wildlife
Many Australians have never seen a cassowary. A stay at Yamacutta is almost certain to put you ahead of the crowd! Some days, we have 5 or 6 birds passing through the garden, often close to the house and pool. Once in the rainforest they are harder to spot, despite their bright blue and red colouring.
The extraordinary Southern Cassowary is an endagered species with estimates of around only 1500 remaining. It is normally a solitary bird. It lives for up to 50 years and weighs 60 or 70 Kg.. The male incubates the eggs and rears the chicks until they are about a year old. A cassowary egg weighs over 500gms.
The 3 horny toes on its strong legs leave unmistakeable tracks. The sharp nails on its inner toes can easily rip flesh .
36 % of Australia's mammal species can be found in the Wet Tropics region...
also 50% of the birds
23% of the reptiles
27% of the frogs
37% of the freshwater fish
60% of the butterfly species
65% of the ferns
21% of the cycad species
37% of the conifer species
30% of the orchid species ...and the richest insect fauna of any area of the country.

Over 13 Kilometres of pristine sandy palm-fringed beach link North Mission Beach, Wongaling and South Mission Beach.

The beach is a great place to stretch your eyes, your mind and of course your legs.
With such an expanse of open space, it is never remotely crowded.

• From April to October, the warm sea is heaven for swimming and watersports.
• From November to April the Yamacutta Rainforest Lagoon Pool is the place for swimming.
(From November to April you can't swim in the sea due to the presence of deadly Box Jelly Fish ~ unless you choose to swim in the special stinger net enclosure & wear a protective stinger suit. Take no chances.. you are unlikely to survive the venomous sting without immediate treatment.)
