The Valdarno (Arno valley) runs from Florence to Arezzo. Unlike the Chianti (which runs between Florence and Siena and relies heavily on tourism), the Valdarno has remained an economically viable part of Italy, specializing in small, family-run businesses situated in the hearts of medieval towns - and benefiting from all the conveniences Italians look for in their lives: good food, shops, schools, public transportation, etc. While the Chianti has undergone a recent boom thanks to the tourist trade, the Valdarno has remained populated with local families who have lived here for generations... The central location (near A1 highway) makes it great to live and an easy commute to major cities (Florence, Arezzo, Siena) but also ideal for the intrepid traveller who wishes to discover Tuscany more quietly.
