Cedar Key - Eco-Tourism

Posted by cindy svec on Sunday, February 11, 2007 - 16:09

Cedar Key FL is home to the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. Cedar Key is located about 1 hour southwest of Gainesville, Florida. Cedar Keys NWR covers about 800 acres on 13 keys in the Gulf. For bird watchers and naturalists, the NWR is one of the "must sees" on a short list of Florida destinations. The town is small - about 900 fulltime residents. It's primarily a fishing/arts village, supplemented by seasonal tourism. The town has a bit of a "lost in time" feel to it. There are no restaurant or hotel chains. And no Disney! The area is relatively undiscovered except for area fisherpeople, birdwatchers, and some snowbirds. High season is mid-Jan. through Jul.. Some of the refuge is closed during nesting season – check with the NWR before you go! Perfect for folks who want to park their car restaurants, shopping, and marinas are all within a short walk. Located near many excellent day trips – Cedar Key is a great destination for families, fisherfolks, and birdwatchers.
