National Register of Historic Places in Sevierville, Tennessee

The National Register of Historic Places contains more entries for Sevierville, Tennessee than you might expect. The town has fewer than 20,000 residents, but boasts an impressive list of historic sites that will keep tourists staying in holiday rentals in Sevierville busy for many days.

The Sevier County Courthouse is one example. Designed by the McDonald Brothers of Louisville, Kentucky, the courthouse was completed in 1896 and stands as an example of authentic turn-of-the-century American architecture. Near the courthouse is the Sevierville Commercial District. Buildings here date to the early 20th century. Visitors can walk Court Avenue, Bryce Street, and Commerce Street, all of which will transport them to days gone by.

Much older is Buckingham House, which was constructed in the late 1700s by Thomas Buckingham. This residence is located between the towns of Sevierville and Boyd's Creek and gives visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle and culture of early United States history. Also from this era is the family plantation of the Brabsons. Built in the early 1790s, the plantation includes a house constructed of rough-hewn planks from the local woods. A few years later, a plantation and distillery was constructed nearby. Called Wheatlands, it can still be toured today. Not to be missed is the Harrisburg Covered Bridge, one of a few such bridges still standing in its original form.

For visitors that prefer a glimpse of the technology used in days gone by, the Tennessee Museum of Aviation, located in Sevierville, will provide a very pleasant afternoon.
