Discover Fort Oglethorpe

Posted by Radonna Parrish on Monday, December 10, 2007

If Fort Oglethorpe could talk, it would tell fascinating stories of cavalrymen, presidents, polo games and parades. It would also tell stories of the recent renovation and restoration efforts that are currently bringing new life back into the historic post. Throughout the post’s 100 years of existence, Fort Oglethorpe has been the home of the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 11th, 12th, and 16th US Cavalries. It’s grounds have been visited by military figures, Presidents, and famous entertainers. The elegance of its architecture, from the Classic Renaissance of the original construction to the later Neo-Classic, lent an air of charming unity. In 1947, Fort Oglethorpe was declared surplus by the Army and the City of Fort Oglethorpe was established. Today some 100 structures remain from 1902-04 forming the core of the Historic District of Fort Oglethorpe.
