Recreational Activities in South Lake Tahoe

Located in El Dorado County, South Lake Tahoe is a California city situated in the Sierra Nevada mountain chain. The city lies along U.S. Interstate 50, which tourists can follow into nearby Nevada to reach the capital of that state, Carson City. The city boasts about 20,000 permanent residents, many of whom work in the tourism industry, enthusiastically welcoming visitors who come to stay in vacation homes in South Lake Tahoe during both the summer and winter.

The eastern end of the city lies on the state line that divides California from Nevada; this is where the tourist areas are mainly located. One such area is the Heavenly Mountain Resort, which features almost 100 separate skin runs served by 30 ski lifts. The resort spans areas in both California and Nevada and encompasses almost 5,000 acres; fully one-third of this area is developed for snowboarders and skiers. The highest elevation the lift services reach is over 10,000 feet, making Heavenly the highest ski resort in the areas surrounding scenic Lake Tahoe.
