Located in the greater Miami area, Surfside is a city located in southern Florida. With fewer than 6,000 permanent residents, it is one of the smaller cities in Miami-Dade County. Surfside is characterized by residential neighborhoods that are pleasantly maintained to have an attractive appearance. Many of the holiday homes and rentals in Surfside consist of single-family homes by so-called "snowbirds" who flee to Florida during the winter to escape colder temperatures further north, but vacate these homes during the spring and summer months, leaving them available for use by those who want to enjoy having tropical breezes and an ocean nearby during their annual school or work vacations.
Surfside features a "homegrown" business district featuring traditional owner-managed small stores. Unlike some holiday destinations, it has not been completely swamped by franchises of national chains. This makes vacationing in Surfside a unique experience where tourists can really get to know the local culture as they dine out and enjoy the nightlife here.
Interestingly, Surfside has a relatively high percentage of Brazilian residents, with only 19 other U.S. cities featuring a greater proportion of people of Brazilian heritage. There are also sizeable populations of Colombians, Peruvians, and Cubans. All of these diverse people have given Surfside a distinct Latin American and Caribbean flair, making it one of the centers of "Floribbean" culture, something that can only be found in certain areas of the state.
