Sacramento is the capital city of California, although not its largest metropolitan area. Still, with almost 500,000 inhabitants, the city certainly has much to offer tourists staying in vacation homes in Sacramento.
Old Town
One thing that no visitor to Sacramento should miss is a day in Old Town. Here, visitors can walk cobbled streets that date from the mid-1800s and let the historic buildings all around take them back to a time when the Gold Rush was still going strong and California had just recently become a state. There is more to do in Old Town than merely stroll the district, however. Tourists can also ride on old style steam trains that have been preserved from the days before diesel and even take a cruise on a paddle steamer.
Sacramento Museums
While Old Town is a sort of living testament to the past, Sacramento also boasts several more traditional museums. The Crocker Art Museum, for example, is older than any other public art museum in the western half of the United States. Much of the museum is in a building exemplifying Victorian architecture, but a recent expansion created new spaces with a modern feel, more than tripling the total square footage of the museum.
For state history, there is no finer place to visit than the California Museum for History, Women, and the Arts. For those with an interest in transport, the California State Railroad Museum and the California Automotive Museum will not disappoint.
