Known by the locals as Rabat - Victoria is the overhang of Britain's Queen Victoria celebrating her Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The capital and central hub of the island, at its heart the upper town of the Citadel fortified against marauding Ottoman Turks in the 17th Century that were uccessfully repelled. Then following an earthquake in 1693 the population decamped to what is now known as Il Borgu or the old town, a mass of twisting narrow alleyways, where Gozo House is located. Victoria offers a thriving daily marketplace, known locally as It_Tokk, 2 theatres on the same street, loads of characterful bars overlooking squares and museums situated in the cluster of buildings forming part of the Citadel.
