Punta Gorda Isles is a waterfront community located in Charlotte County, Florida. It sits right on Charlotte Harbor, giving visitors and residents access both to the harbor and to the Gulf of Mexico that connects to it. This allows people staying in Punta Gorda Isles vacation homes to choose between the relatively calm waters of Charlotte Harbor, which occupy 129 square miles, and the full Gulf where conditions can be more challenging and exhilarating. To traverse to the Gulf, visitors need only to pilot their boats through Boca Grande Pass, which is a lovely stretch of water in itself.
Because Punta Gorda Isles is a planned community, it features over 50 miles of saltwater canals and over 100 miles of sea wall maintained by the surrounding city of Punta Gorda. Because of this planning, Punta Gorda Isles has the appearance of a tropical paradise complete with palm trees. Although tourists can range far afield in Charlotte County to enjoy local attractions, there is also a great deal of recreational activity located right in Punta Gorda Isles itself, including both golf and tennis.
Punta Gorda has been a bustling site of commerce since Spanish colonial days, and its name even reflects this fact, being of Spanish origin. However, the original name of the community was Trabue in honor of its founder.
In 1996, Money Magazine honored Punta Gorda with the designation of "Second Best Place to Live in America" also noting that it was the number one small place to live. Punta Gorda Isles captures that small town ambiance perfectly.
