Malibu is a Southern California city with more than a dozen miles of beautiful Pacific coastline. Famed for generations for being a retreat where the rich and powerful of Hollywood often live, Malibu has about 12,000 permanent residents. What many visitors fail to realize, however, is that there is more to the Malibu area than the beach. Holiday homes in the Malibu countryside provide access to such diverse areas as the Santa Monica Mountains and the Topanga Canyon.
These outlying areas are more rural than is Malibu itself and are criss-crossed by a variety of hiking trails. The names of local parks testify as to the diverse nature of the wilderness in the Malibu countryside: Malibu Bluffs Park, Trancas Canyon Park, Malibu Creek State Park, and the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, to name a few.
In addition to enjoying the wildness of the Malibu countryside, guests to the area are also able to travel into Malibu itself to attend the various festivals that occur there throughout the year. The Malibu Arts Festival takes place each year on the last weekend of July, while the Malibu Chili Cook-off is held to benefit youth organizations and takes place on Labor Day weekend. For a more unusual activity, visit the area in February for the Polar Plunge, an event that takes place at Zuma Beach and benefits the Special Olympics organization. Tourists to the Malibu area in November can choose to participate in the Malibu International Marathon, running either a full or a half marathon since both are available.
