Navarre is a city in northern Spain, but when Americans plan to spend their school or work holidays in vacation rentals in Navarre, they are probably thinking not of Western Europe but of a community in the northwestern part of the state of Florida. Located in the straight section known as the 'panhandle' of the state, Navarre is located at the junction of State Road 87 and U.S. Highway 98. This puts is quite near the naval air station in Pensacola as well as Elgin Air Force Base and Hulburt Field.
Navarre bills itself to tourist as "Florida's Best Kept Secret, though since it is located on the most travelled route between the Fort Walton Beach region and the large city of Pensacola, it is certainly not the case that few Floridians have heard of it. What the slogan likely means, however, is that relatively few people understand the inherent charm that the town of Navarre possesses.
The community is bounded by water on two sides, with the East River to the north and Santa Rosa sound on the Gulf Coast to the south. This means that Navarre has fine beaches. The townspeople have developed facilities for Navarre Beach that includes a park with a water playground, a boardwalk, and a duck pond. Not content to be like many other beach communities, however, Navarre also features a butterfly house near the beach. These attractions make it an excellent low-key vacation getaway for families with children.
