Amelia Island Festival Life

Many Americans are familiar with the more famous islands of the Caribbean such as Puerto Rico or Jamaica, but relatively fewer have heard of Amelia Island, a small island located off the coast of Nassau County, Florida. Vacation rentals on Amelia Island offer visitors access to both Amelia City and Fernandina Beach.

A member of the Sea Islands chain of barrier islands, Amelia Island is just 13 miles long and fewer than five miles wide at any point. History buffs are among the kinds of tourists that will appreciate a visit here: since the mid-1560s, no fewer than eight different nations and world powers have claimed Amelia Island for their own. Among locals, it is even known as the "Isle of Eight Flags."

Annual Festivals Draw Visitors

While the beaches are lovely any time of year and the weather is warm and pleasant no matter when you go, Amelia Island draws more visitors during times of the year when it offers special festivals to locals and tourists alike. One of the most popular is the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, although many tourists prefer the annual Amelia Island Jazz Festival. Other festivals take chamber music, blues music, or film production as their theme. Recent motions pictures filmed on the island include the 2002 John Sayles' film Sunshine State and the 1988 offering The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking.
