Cherry Lake is located in the north-central region of the state of Florida and was created by the damming of Cherry Creek by the Lake Cleve Dam, also known as the Cherry Lake Dam. The dam was finished in 1974, which means that Cherry Lake has welcomed fishers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts for well over a quarter of a century. Cherry Lake vacation homes are popular with visitors to this part of Florida because they offer access to several nearby natural parks and wildlife refuges.
Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Located slightly over 30 miles away from Cherry Lake, this wildlife refuge has been in operation since 1985. The main purpose of the refuge is to preserve and conserve the migratory bird species that use this part of Florida as a resting point during their long seasonal flights. As such, it is an ideal day trip for birdwatchers staying in the Cherry Creek area. The refuge consists of more than 4,000 acres, much of it marshy land or cypress swamp, but it also includes large areas of open water.
St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge
This site is slightly farther from Cherry Lake and requires a drive of almost 60 miles, but the time in the car is well worth it. Natural salt marshes and freshwater swamps provide a variety of activities including fishing, hunting, and hiking. The area is also known for concentrations of butterflies at certain times of year.
Best of all for tourists interested in history and government as well as nature is the fact that St. Marks is located just 25 miles south of the capital of Florida, Tallahassee.
