Many Americans have visited an island at some point in their lives, but relatively fewer have spent much time on an artificially created island. This is precisely what Star Island, Florida is. Shaped like an oval and located in Biscayne Bay, Star Island actually falls within the city limits of Miami Beach. It was finished in the early 1920s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers but represents the brainchild of Carl Fisher, known in Florida lore as one of the men who founded Miami Beach.
There are 35 residence sites on the island, with some of them available as holiday homes on Star Island. These vacation rentals provide tourists with a place to stay that is geographically very close to Miami, but is physically separated from it, which creates the effect of a 'retreat' from the vibrant hustle and bustle of life in the big city. This effect is underscored by the fact that Star Island is a gated community with a guardhouse. Getting to Miami is simple enough, however; all tourists need to do is take Bridge Road to the MacArthur Causeway.
Many Americans have already seen portions of Star Island without knowing it; portions of the 1994 motion picture The Specialist were shot here. In addition, Star Island has served as the home of many recognizable names in the fields of sports and entertainment including Rosie O'Donnell, Shaquille O'Neal, Madonna, and Sylvester Stallone. One thing that is quite interesting about Star Island is that there is no public access to the ocean, though home sites have access.
