Reno, Nevada is located just 30 minutes from the capital of the state, Carson City. Tourists staying in a holiday home in Reno can spend a few days enjoying the high-rise casinos in this state where gambling is legal, but they can also drive south for half an hour and obtain a glimpse of the fascinating history of the western United States.
The dome of the state capital building is a good example. Covered completely in silver, it gleams brightly on sunny days -- and the typical day in Nevada is very sunny indeed. This silver was mined from the nearby Comstock Lode, the greatest silver strike ever found in the United States. Tourists interested in mining can visit the Nevada State Museum, also located in Carson City, which features a replica of a working mine.
Those who want to explore the mining past of the region more deeply can drive about an hour to reach Virginia City, home of the Comstock Lode. Here, you can visit the newspaper offices where Mark Twain worked as a reporter, travel the same rails as the famous author on a working steam railroad, and go on a tour of an actual mine from late the 1800s.
Carson City is also home to the United States Mint. For years, many of the nation's coins were minted here. Now, the mint is open to tourists who can explore the machines that once churned out thousands of coins every day.
