Ocean Beach: Where Individualism Matters

Located just a short driving distance to the northwest of San Diego, California, Ocean Beach is a laidback seaside community characterized by days filled with sunshine and the people are unpretentious and individualistic. Unlike some beachside cities, Ocean Beach has not been taken over by the great franchising movement that began to sweep through the United States in the 1970s. The people like it that way, with local businesspersons and women starting and running most of the businesses that serve the town's needs. When a Starbucks Coffee Shop established itself in Ocean Beach a few years ago, it raised a few eyebrows because it was going against the longstanding traditions of the town.

Local residents refer to the town as O.B. and pride themselves on the eclectic collection of shops that line the main street of Newport Avenue. From antique stores and piercing shops to tattoo parlors and surf shops, Ocean Beach is almost like a town that has stood still and still exemplifies the kind of freethinking attitude that many people believe imbues all of California. That sort of freedom still lives on here and is one reason why vacation homes in Ocean Beach draw visitors every year.

The town is a mere seven miles from the downtown areas of San Diego and is also located within striking distance of Mission Bay, Mission Beach, and the San Diego River. And of course there is the beach itself, which provides ample recreational activities in the form of sunbathing, swimming, surfing, and body surfing, to name just a few of the water sports popular here.
