The medieval city of Lucca, Tuscany
Posted by James Edmunds on Wednesday, September 19, 2007
Lucca is ideally located for visitors who want to visit Lucca, Florence, Pisa and the seaside villages at the Cinque Terre. By autostrada, Florence is 38 highway miles (61km) to the east, Pisa is 22 miles (35km) southwest, and the famous seaside villages of the Cinque Terre are 60 miles (96km) northwest.
Lucca is completely surrounded by enormous walls. The walls are about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) long, and there is enough space on top for a bike trail, parks, playgrounds and a coffee bar/gelato shop. Because the city inside was completely developed by the 17th century, the walls had the effect of preserving intact the entire medieval city. Most of the medieval city inside the walls is closed to automobile traffic, so the locals all ride bikes!
