The town of Blowing Rock is named after a unique rock formation that extends more than 1500 feet over the Johns River gorge. The rock's shape and enormous size causes winds coming from the gorge to blow in an upwards direction, leading to the unusual spectacle of seeing lightweight objects floating up into the sky.
Major tourist attractions in Blowing Rock include the rock itself as well as the Blue Ridge Mountains all around. These provide excellent views from practically any vantage point in the town, which has a population of fewer than 2000 people.
Tourists staying in vacation rentals in Blowing Rock will find that there is no better place for outdoor adventure. Located in North Carolina just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, tourists here can enjoy golfing as well as whitewater rafting when they are not busy canoeing, rock climbing, hiking, and biking. That is not even counting the many opportunities to go fishing in nearby lakes and streams.
In the winter, Blowing Rock becomes a premier destination resort for skiers and snowboarders.
The elevation of the town is approximately 3500 feet. This elevation means that summer temperatures are pleasantly cool and very rarely exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. In the winter, temperatures can fall into the 20s, which means that the snow skiers depend on can last for an entire season. Tourists staying in Blowing Rock in the winter should bring warm clothing and be prepared for frequent snow and sleet.
