Longboat Key: Beaches and Tennis
Longboat Key is a Florida town located along the state's Gulf Coast. Occupying portions of both Manatee and Sarasota counties, Longboat Key is situated on one of the state's barrier islands. Fishing here is excellent because Longboat Key vacation homes offer tourists access to both the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay.
Longboat Key has the long, white sandy beaches that are characteristic of barrier islands in this geographical area. As such, swimming and water sports are popular with locals and visitors alike. There are more than ten excellent access points for these beaches, many of them located along Gulf of Mexico Drive. The beaches on Longboat Key close at 11pm and open each morning at 5am.
One item that makes Longboat Key stand out for sports-minded tourists is its public tennis center. Featuring ten courts made of soft clay, the Longboat Key Tennis Center has organized events available on a daily basis. For those who want to hone their game, the center also features specialized courts set aside for teaching, as well as teaching professionals who can help you reach your highest tennis potential. For those who wish to play but have no partner, a match-making service is also available. The tennis center won the 1999 Outstanding Tennis Facility Award from the U.S. Tennis Association.
Nature lovers will also find much to do on Longboat Key. Most notable is the Quick Point Nature Reserve, which helps to protect the wetlands and mangrove swamp habitats on the shore of the island.
