Big Pine Key is an island in the Florida Keys, but the name also refers to a town on the island. With a population slightly over 5,000 permanent residents, the town of Big Pine Key provides tourists with a chance to enjoy the sight of original Key Deer habitat. This species of deer still lives on the island; local inhabitants and the regional governments have taken measures to preserve their habitat.
The National Key Deer Refuge located on Big Pine Key is home to the Blue Hole, which is the only lake in the Florida Keys comprised of fresh water. As lakes go, it has an unusual history, consisting of an old rock quarry whose products once were used to build local roads and notably, the Overseas Railroad constructed by Henry Flagler. Since being abandoned, the quarry has filled in with fresh water and provides a haven for local wildlife including birds, snakes, alligators, and iguanas.
