When people hear the word "key" in relation to Florida, they often think of the island chain known as the Florida Keys, and for good reason. In the case of Key Biscayne, however, the name refers to both an island in the Keys and to a major community on that island.
Located in Miami-Dade County, the town of Key Biscayne is classified as a village and has slightly more than 10,000 permanent residents, with many others coming to stay in holiday rentals in Key Biscayne during both winter and summer months. The island of Key Biscayne is famous for its beaches, with most of the island at a low elevation. This produces beaches with a very gentle slope rather than cliffs or hills.
Tourists in Key Biscayne can easily reach the large city of Miami by driving across the Rickenbacker Causeway, which was first built in the late 1940s. Because Key Biscayne is so close to Miami, it is actually considered part of the greater Miami area.
Famous Residents
Key Biscayne is famous for being a favorite holiday spot of U.S. president Richard Nixon. During his time in office, Nixon actually maintained a home here. Indianapolis 500 Winner Emerson Fittipaldi also lives on Key Biscayne.
Events and Amenities
The island hosts the Sony Ericsson Open Tennis Tournament each year; it takes place in the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. Other amenities in Key Biscayne include a golf course and ample facilities for fishing and other water sports.
