Mission Beach: An Offshore Community

Although there is a city called Mission Beach in Queensland, Australia, American tourists are far more likely to choose to stay in holiday homes in Mission Beach, California. Interestingly, the community was constructed on a sandbar that lies between Mission Bay and the vast stretches of the Pacific Ocean. While offshore cities are very common in the state of Florida, they are uncommon in California. Mission Beach is technically a part of the much larger city of San Diego, which is one of the southern-most cities in the state.

Mission Beach offers tourists almost two full miles of ocean access, with boardwalks typical of the beaches, making it much simpler for both the very old and the very young to enjoy a stroll along the beach, though of course many people greatly enjoy walking directly in the sand itself. Mission Beach features two distinct communities referred to as North Mission and South Mission, with a peninsula separating them.

Beach activities dominate the lives of locals and visitors alike. These include not just the expected sunbathing and surfing, but also biking, skateboarding, and beach sports such as Frisbee tossing and the throwing game known as horseshoes. More activities still are available at the Wave House Athletic Club, which offers many fitness opportunities including aquatic classes.

Although there are no nude beaches in Mission Bay, the community's law enforcers do not usually enforce the statute against thong bikinis. As a result, many of Mission Beach's inhabitants sunbathe in these skimpy outfits. The opportunity to do so, in fact, attracts college students from local universities.
