Also known as the General Grant Grove, Grant Grove is an area located in Kings Canyon National Park. The purpose of the park is, in part, to preserve the large and historic trees that populate Grant Grove. These trees are giant sequoias, which are a form of redwood tree that grows only in a very narrow band of climates in the western section of the United States. Grant Grove itself is barely more than 150 acres of forest, but it contains some of the most famous trees in the world, and ones whose names, coincidentally, mark the epoch in history during which the existence of these trees was first discovered by Americans of European ancestry.
The General Grant
The General Grant tree, named after the Union general, is recognized as the second biggest tree in the entire world. Also present in the grove is the Robert E. Lee tree, which ranks twelfth in the world in terms of tree size.
The General Grant tree has a diameter of more than 40 feet and an estimated volume in excess of 45,000 cubic feet. The Robert E. Lee tree is the second largest tree present in Grant Grove, but because it is near the General Grant, it appears much less impressive than it truly is. The Lincoln tree is large at the base but tapers sharply as it grows upward, while the 'Fallen Monarch' is a giant sequoia that can be walked through, allowing visitors a glimpse inside these giants of the forest.
Grant Grove holiday rentals offer convenient access to both Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks.
