Don Pedro Island Offers High Degree of Solitude

Don Pedro Island lies in Charlotte County, which is located in the southwestern region of the state of Florida. One of the barrier islands separated from the coast by a narrow strip of ocean, Don Pedro Island lies slightly to the north of Little Gasparilla Island. In fact, nothing separates these two islands except a mangrove swamp and a thin stretch of beach. Don Pedro Island is at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico.

As vacation spots go, Don Pedro Island excels at offering quiet and solitude. Much of its appeal for tourists staying in holiday rentals on Don Pedro Island is the fact that the island has no road access at all. All visitors must arrive and leave by boat, which means that relatively few tourists descend here compared to other barrier island locations such as Miami Beach.

Don Pedro Island State Park

Besides the tranquility that permeates the island, one of the main reason tourists visit is to tour Don Pedro Island State Park, which takes up a large portion of the land that is not occupied by private residences. The park is characterized by mangrove trees and a variety of wildlife including gopher tortoises, West Indian manatees, American oystercatchers, and bald eagles.

The park occupies 230 acres of the island and offers activities such as snorkeling and shelling on the Gulf side, with boating and fishing also popular with visitors.
