Not many places in the world can claim to have been created during the 20th century, but North Captiva Island, located off the coast of Florida, is one of those rare exceptions. The island, also known as Upper Captiva, was cut off from the larger land mass of Captiva Island in the early 1920s when a hurricane swept the area and created a channel known as Redfish Pass.
Life on North Captiva Island is, to use a pun, a captivating mix of isolation and modern life. While the island does have electrical power from lines on the northern edge of Captiva Island, it doesn't have any road connections to any other land mass; the only access is by boat or small plane. This leads to a situation in which many of the comforts of modern life are available in North Captiva Island vacation homes for rent, but many of the annoyances of modern life, such as noise and traffic, are missing. Some might call that an ideal combination.
One of the primary attractions on North Captiva Island is the white sandy beaches that occupy a full five miles of coastline. These offer excellent opportunities to go "shelling, a Florida pastime that involves walking the seashore in search of tropical sea shells that can be surprisingly large and colorful compared to those seen on beaches further north. Shelling is so popular, in fact, that the tourist information centers on North Captive Island actually offers a "Shell Seeker's Guide" to interested visitors.
