Islamorada means "Purple Island" in Spanish, but in English it refers to an incorporated village located in Monroe County, Florida. Known as a village made up of islands, Islamorada is an unusual community in that it is located on several different islands of the Florida Keys including Upper and Lower Matecumbe Key, Tea Table Key, Windley Key, and Plantation Key. Thus, vacation homes in Islamorada may be on one of several different islands.
There are almost 7,000 permanent residents scattered across the islands that make up the town of Islamorada. The name came from Spanish explorers who discovered the islands for Spain in the early days of the Age of Exploration.
The Overseas Highway
One of the most interesting aspects of visiting the Florida Keys is the opportunity to drive on the Overseas Highway, a road constructed to link many of the various islands together. It is an engineering marvel, constructed to be strong enough to withstand the hurricane force winds that sometimes strike the Florida Keys. Although it is possible to fly to some of the larger Keys by purchasing tickets on regional airlines, many tourists choose to drive specifically so they can enjoy several hours on a road crossing the sea. At mile marker 82, tourists to Islamorada can see a memorial marker erected to commemorate the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935.
Islamorada is an excellent place to visit during winter and summer both because it possesses the warm tropical climate typical of the Florida Keys.
