Rosemary Beach is located in Walton County, Florida, which places it in the panhandle of the state, near the Gulf of Mexico. The town was conceived as a master planned community from the start, but is not a city in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, it is located on unincorporated land in the county, which means that it is governed by the county government. Construction of the town began in the late 1990s and has continued until the present, with the town more than 90% completed.



Rosemary Beach occupies about 105 acres and includes more than 500 sites for homes, with many of them already completed. Although some of these homes are owner-occupied, others serve as holiday homes in Rosemary Beach and are rented out to vacationers who come here to see the "Emerald Coast, famous for its sugar-white sands and brilliantly-hued ocean waters. The master planning of the town, however, has taken into account the fact that residents and tourists need more than home sites. There is also a town center in Rosemary Beach; it contains restaurants and shops and sponsors regular activities.



Many Americans may already have seen glimpses of Rosemary Beach without realizing it; the community was featured on Home Garden Television's series Dream House in 1999. On this episode, a furnished home in Rosemary Beach was a grand prize given away to one of the contestants.



Although Rosemary Beach offers access to the Gulf of Mexico instead of the Caribbean, the architecture in the city is designed to make people think of a beachside resort in the West Indies.
