Point Loma is a community located at the seaside in the city of San Diego, California. Consisting of a hill-covered peninsula that juts out into the Pacific Ocean, Point Loma is situated in the far southwestern corner of both the state and nation. The community is near San Diego's Old Town area and has a population of less than 50,000 people.
The peninsula is considered historically important because it was the first place where Europeans came ashore in the land that now comprises the state of California. Therefore, vacation homes in Point Loma are often described as being located in the place where "California first began," though of course this description fails to recognize the presence and many contributions of native coastal Indians who lived in the Point Loma area.
Annual Festivals in Point Loma
The 1542 arrival of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, recognized as that first European to land in California, is celebrated each year in October, the festival lasting a full week.
In addition, the oldest ethnic festival in San Diego takes place in Point Loma. This is the Festa do Espirito Santo, which translates from Portuguese to mean Feast of the Holy Spirit. This religious event, put together by the large Portuguese ethnic community in Point Loma, has taken place every year for more than a hundred years.
April brings a yearly "Day at the Docks" festival that celebrates the sport fishing industry in the region.
