Located about two hours south of Tampa, Little Gasparilla Island is one of Florida's famed barrier islands. It is part of a chain of such islands in the Gulf of Mexico, but unlike islands such as Captiva, Boca Grande, and Sanibel, also in the chain, Little Gasparilla Island offers the peace and quiet that comes from having no road connections whatsoever to the mainland.
Even though the island is bridgeless, it is located only ten minutes away from the mainland of Florida, and all tourists have to do to reach their Little Gasparilla Island vacation rentals is take a short boat ride. Once on the island, they can explore to their hearts' content paths forged in white sands, getting a glimpse of the "real" Florida as nature formed her. There are over seven miles of beaches on Little Gasparilla Island and native fauna include a wide variety of birds including the egret, the osprey, the white heron, and two relatively rare species: the bald eagle, and the white pelican.
When tourists tire of bird watching, they can walk those seven miles of beaches collecting tropical sea shells and sand dollars, both of which wash up on shore in abundance. Beach walks are also ideal for observing the groups of dolphins that sometimes swim past the shore.
Sport fishing is another pastime for tourists on Little Gasparilla Island, with excellent tarpon and snook fishing available.
