Balboa Island: Oceanfront Access to Orange County Attractions

Balboa Island is a community located in the city of Newport Beach. It is located in Orange County, an area of Southern California that also includes famous tourist attractions such as the theme parks Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm as well as dinner show venues such as Medieval Times, where visitors can eat a meal themed around the Middle Ages while they watch knights joust on horseback.

Balboa Island is actually made up of three islands, all of which are artificially formed and are situated in Newport Harbor. The names of the three islands are Little Balboa Island, Balboa Island, and Collins Island. Bridges connect the three islands together so that they form one cohesive community.

Interestingly, Balboa Island is among the most densely populated areas in the county, with about 3,000 permanent residents living on a mere 0.2 square miles of land. It also rivals lower Manhattan in terms of real estate values, mainly because of the proximity of the ocean and the prevalence of oceanfront views. These features make holiday rentals on Balboa Island highly desirable.

The island itself has somewhat of a European character because of the dominance of mixed use lots where the bottom story is commercial and the upper stories are residential. People can therefore live above businesses, which makes commuting and shopping a simple matter requiring no transportation. The outside coast of Balboa Island features a great many marinas and docks, indicating the widespread interest in boating that is evident among island inhabitants.
