Southwest Harbor has art shops, shopping, restaurants and various
amenities of its own within walking distance. Bike to enchanting
Seawall. In season, take the nearby and free Islander shuttle to
Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain, Bar Harbor, and a
wonderful variety of sites. In Bar Harbor you can drive or walk out
to Bar Island for hiking and wonderful views, but be sure to be back
before the tide turns! A short drive takes you to Bass Harbor Head
Light, among the most photographed objects on the North American
continent.
Rent a bicycle and take it with you on the ferries to explore Swan
Island, Winter Harbor, Schoodic or the Cranberries. Rent a kayak or
go on a guided kayak tour and make Mt. Desert a personal experience,
afloat on Frenchman Bay at sunset.
In season, check out the free Acadia Weekly newspaper for
information
about the Island's repertory theatre, clambakes, free activities at
Acadia National Park such as photo tours, instructional
opportunities, hiking adventures, terrific views, horse drawn
carriage rides; Bar Harbor with its shops, whale and puffin cruises,
and specials on lobster dinners.
Nearby Island Astronomy offers telescopes and other astronomical
instruments as well as observing opprotunities. Sail aboard the Sea
Princess from Northeast Harbor on a sunset cruise to Little
Cranberry Island and dinner at Isleford Dock Restaurant. Travel to
Schoodic Penninsula and experience the untamed Atlantic.
