At first hearing, "Weeki Wachee" most likely sounds like a remote vacation spot in the Polynesian Islands or possibly Hawaii, but nothing could be farther from the truth. In actual fact, Weeki Wachee is a city located in Hernando County, Florida. This places it near the Gulf Coast, but Weeki Wachee is not directly on the water but located a short distance inland.
Weeki Wachee Springs
Two of the most popular tourist amenities in the area are the Weeki Wachee Preserve and an amusement park known as Weeki Wachee Springs. The latter is known as a 'natural' amusement park largely composed of a spring that feeds a large pond. This pond has been altered to allow for external viewing, akin to large aquarium. Visitors to Weeki Wachee Springs can enjoy the sight of natural marine animals in the pond, and for can view quite an unusual attraction: 'mermaids' that swim about in glamorous outfits. These mermaids perform several times each day and have been featured in movies from the golden age of Hollywood, including the 1949 film Neptune's Daughter.
More than Mermaids
There are also several water rides in the park. These include both boat rides and attractions that allow children and adults to enjoy giant water slides. Furthermore, park visitors have an opportunity to watch manatees as they go about their placid business of feeding and surfacing.
This area is therefore unique, with many tourists who have stayed in vacation rentals in Weeki Wachee able to go home and recount their tales of 'mermaids in the wild'.
