Valrico is an area of unincorporated county land located in Hillsborough County, Florida. This means that Valrico is not a city with a government of its own, but is instead administered by the county government. Despite not having official city status, Valrico can boast more inhabitants than many cities in the state of Florida; there are approximately 6500 permanent residents living in the area popularly referred to as Valrico.
Hillsborough County is located along the Gulf Coast of Florida, but Valrico itself is situated in the eastern section of the county. Since it sits inland, it provides tourists staying in vacation rentals in Valrico with easy access to the sun, surf, and white sugar-sand beaches that characterize the Gulf of Mexico, but also makes it simple for them to reach areas in the center of the peninsula of Florida.
The Valrico area has been inhabited by American settlers since the antebellum days of cotton plantations, but the area began to be more heavily settled in the late 1800s after the Central and Peninsular Railroad brought its tracks to the area. Florida, of course, was once a Spanish colony and the name of this area reflects this fact; Valrico is a shortened version of "valle rico, which is Spanish for "rich valley.
Attractions near Valrico include the Florida Aquarium, which is located in Tampa and features more than 20,000 marine animals and plants from not just Florida, but from around the world.
