Tarpon Springs is a city located about halfway down the Gulf Coast of Florida. A medium-sized community, Tarpon Springs is situated in Pinellas County and boasts approximately 20,000 permanent residents. In an interesting twist of history, this Florida city has a higher proportion of Greek-American residents than any city in the nation. This gives Tarpon Springs a unique flavor and flair that is demonstrated, for example, in the number of restaurants serving Greek food in the vicinity. Many of these same restaurants also specialize in seafood served in both Greek and other styles.
Tarpon Springs first made its name as a site where sponge diving was an important industry. Relics of this time have still survived in the form of two sponge-packing houses that are now historic sites as well as five different boats from the era including the Duchess, a sponge hooking boat and the St. Nicholas III, a sponge diving boat. Visitors can see these docked and imagine a time gone by.
One of the best things about vacation rentals in Tarpon Springs is the availability of the Tarpon Springs Historic District, an areas in the city featuring almost 150 historic buildings in a space approximately 700 acres in area. Portions of this district resemble a traditional Greek seaside village, complete with boutiques still selling authentic sea sponges. At the end of the Sponge Docks District, tourists can visit the Tarpon Springs Aquarium.
