Stuart, Florida: The Sailfish Capital of the World

Located in the "Treasure Coast" region of Florida, Stuart is a small city located in Martin County. Although much of Martin County lies along the Atlantic, Stuart itself is located a short distance inland. Stuart serves as the county seat and is the only incorporated city within its borders, providing a home for approximately 16,000 permanent residents. Nearby cities include Port St. Lucie.



The Treasure Coast was somewhat late to be settled by Americans and immigrants. It was not until the 1870s that the first government installation was placed here. That was a United States Lifesaving Station, which was erected on Hutchinson Island, quite near Stuart. This station now goes by the name "Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge" and can be visited by tourists as a National Historic Site.



Locals refer to their city as the "Sailfish Capital of the World, and indeed, many tourists who choose to stay in Stuart vacation homes are lured here because of the large sailfish population to be found in the coastal waters of Martin County.



The Stuart Heritage Museum



A charming local attraction is the Stuart Heritage Museum, located in a general merchandise store first constructed in 1901. Listed in publications such as A Guide to Florida's Historic Architecture, the Stuart Heritage Museum seeks to educate visitors on the history and culture in Stuart. There are more than 10,000 separate artifacts in the museum's collection with the bulk of them dating from the late 1800s to the middle of the 20th century.
