St. Augustine Historical Sites

St. Augustine is a small city situated along the northern Atlantic coast of Florida. Anyone with a strong interest in American history should be sure to visit this city, since it represents the oldest place in the United States that has been continuously inhabited by Europeans. St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers and has many sites that relate to the period of Spanish colonization areas now a part of the United States.



The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park



One unusual place that those staying in holiday rentals in St. Augustine can visit is the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. Situated along the Intracoastal Waterway, this park provides visitors with the lovely ambiance of the "natural Florida, but its true claim to fame lies in its reputation of being the original site where Ponce de Leon first landed in Florida in 1513. De Leon had come with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World, and for years afterward searched mainland Florida for the fabled "fountain of youth. Whether that fountain is truly located in Florida has never been determined, but generations of tourists have enjoyed following in de Leon's footsteps and looking for it on their own. This park is an excellent place to start.



The Castillo de San Marcos



Another popular tourist attraction here is the Castillo de San Marcos. First built in the late 1600s, it is the oldest fort of its type in the United States and predates the establishment of the nation by more than a full century. Rumored to be haunted, the fort was featured on Ghost Adventures, a Travel Channel show, in 2009.
