Marathon: Many Islands, One Community
For many, the word "marathon" conjures up images of a long-distance running race. For others, it can refer to a battle fought in ancient Greece. Vacationers to Florida, however recognize Marathon as a small city located on several different islands of the Florida Keys. Situated in Monroe County, Marathon is considered to include areas of Boot Key, Fat Deer Key, Long Point Key, and Grassy Key, among others. As such, it is fairly unique among communities, most of which are not spread out over so many separate islands. The population of Marathon comprises some 10,000 permanent residents along with tourists who come to stay in vacation homes for rent on Marathon.
Fishing is a popular tourist pastime in Marathon, and the city is well situated to support and promote it. Boot Key Harbor is located between Key Vaca and Boot Key. A natural body of water rather than a manmade harbor, it lies completely inside Marathon city limits.
