Located in Citrus County, Inverness is a Florida city that offers visitors a large range of interesting things to do and see. Tourists staying in vacation rentals in Inverness can, for example, view the historic downtown courthouse where Elvis Presley filmed a courtroom scene in the 1961 motion picture Follow that Dream.
Though the occasional Elvis fan does descend on the town for just this reason, more people come because the Florida Trail Association has designated Inverness as a "Gateway Community" that offers access to several major trails including the Withlacoochee State Trail, which takes visitors alongside lakes and over small bridges crossing railway lines. Still other want to see "Tree City, USA," a title granted to Inverness by the National Arbor Day Foundation and confirmed by the United States Forest Service.
A wonderful time to visit is during the last weekend in October. This is when the Great American Cooterfestival takes place in order to honor and promote the conservation of the Florida cooter turtle. The event includes not just family-appropriate music and games but also crafts for one and all. It takes place at the Wallace Brooks Park adjoining Lake Henderson.
Those who attend the Cooterfestival are advised to stay at least a week so that they can also attend the Festival of the Arts, a fine art show and competition that happens during the first weekend in November each year. More than 100 artists attend each year to display their works.
