Relatively few places in the United States offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy a chance of island living. Florida is one of the exceptions, with barrier islands up and down both long coastlines hosting many resort and vacation communities. Holmes Beach is one of these. Located on Anna Maria Island in Manatee County, Holmes Beach has approximately 5,000 permanent residents. The city is situated in the approximate center of the island between the neighboring towns of Bradenton Beach and Anna Maria.
Anna Maria Island itself consists of a long, thin strip of land separated from the coast of Florida by a narrow stretch of ocean.
Holiday homes for rent in Holmes Beach allow visitors to tour not just one island but two, since included inside its city limits is a separate island known as Key Royale. This geographic feature makes Holmes Beach one of the more unusual towns in the United States. Until 1960, there were no inhabitants on Key Royale, but these days, this section of town is undergoing development thanks to a bridge that has opened to join Key Royale to town of Holmes Beach.
Notable residents past and present of Holmes Beach have included author Don Maloney and baseball player Scott Rolen.
The Anna Maria Golf Outing
Each September for over a decade, the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce has sponsored a "golf outing" at an island golf course. Both avid golfers and those new to the sport are welcome, with proceeds benefitting local scholarships.
