Fort Pierce, Florida Offers Several Marine Attractions

Fort Pierce, also commonly noted as Ft. Pierce, is a city on the Atlantic coast of Florida. Located in St. Lucie County, is it known across Florida as the "Sunrise City." As a mid-sized city, Fort Pierce boasts a population slightly over 40,000 permanent residents but attracts many vacationers. These tourists often stay in holiday rentals in Fort Pierce because they offer access to so many diverse attractions in the city and surrounding environs. The city proper occupies about six square miles; of this area, about a third is water.

The St. Lucie County Marine Center

Also known as the St. Lucie County Aquarium, this is a family-friendly tourist attraction that is open from Tuesday to Saturday each week. It opens at 10am and closes at 4pm each day, which gives visitors not just plenty of time to see the fish and other sea life on display, but also permits them to experience a second attraction in the afternoon after the aquarium has closed. Admission is very reasonable; tickets for both children and adults are less than five dollars each. In addition, on the first Tuesday of each month, locals and visitors alike are admitted free of charge.

The Manatee Observation Center

To see a larger species of sea life than can be represented in the county aquarium, visit the Manatee Observation Center. Overlooking the Indian River Lagoon, which is a saltwater estuary, as well as the freshwater source known as Moore's Creek, the Manatee Observation Center has decks and walkways so visitors can enjoy the sight of these marine mammals.
