Dunnellon is a city located in the north-central region of Florida. A small town situated in Marion County, the population consists of fewer than 2,000 permanent inhabitants.
Attractions in and Around Dunnellon
Besides the small-town atmosphere serving as a pleasant break for vacationers from large cities, Dunnellon offers tourists the chance to explore some interesting locations. Fans of the 2001 horror motion picture Jeepers Creepers will recognize several areas around the town that served as principal filming locations, particularly along Tiger Trail Road, also known as SW 180th Avenue Road.
Another attraction is the Rainbow River, whose headwaters at Rainbow Springs deliver a staggering amount of water -- up to 600 million gallons per day. A first-magnitude spring, it is fourth in the state in terms of amount of water discharged. Smaller springs along the river add to the headwaters, many of them discharging from the crevices, sand boils, and caves that line the full length of the Rainbow River.
Just a few miles outside of town, tourists staying in holiday homes in Dunnellon will find Rainbow Springs State Park. Here activities include snorkeling, canoeing, picnicking, and swimming. Water temperatures remain fairly constant in the low 70s for much of the year. The park also includes miles of walking trails that provide the opportunity to explore local habitats and observe native flora and fauna.
Archeology buffs will particularly enjoy the area because the abundant waters here have attracted human habitation for more than 10,000 years.
