Road Racing in Daytona Beach, Florida

Daytona Beach is a mid-sized city located in Volusia County, Florida. With a population of more than 60,000, the city is a bustling place with plenty to do for tourists staying in holiday homes in Daytona Beach. In fact, there is so much to do here that Daytona Beach is part of the region known as the "Fun Coast of Florida."

Hard Packed Sand Means Beach Driving

Anyone who has lived near the seashore knows that vehicles and sand usually do not mix. Daytona Beach, however, is one of the few places in the United States where the sand is packed so hard that motorized vehicles are allowed to drive along the beach in certain restricted areas. The Daytona Beach Road Course held races on the sand for more than 50 years.

The Lure of NASCAR

Now, Daytona Beach is the world headquarters for the racing association known as NASCAR as well as the Grand American Road Racing Association. Because so many tourists attend local races, Daytona Beach's population fluctuates greatly depending on the season.

The best time to visit for racing is during early February when Speedweeks draws more than 200,000 visitors to this region of Florida. The Coke Zero 400 race in July is another important event, as is Bike Week during early March and Biketoberfest half a year later in late October.

Natural Wonders

Daytona Beach, however, is about more than racing. The Halifax River Lagoon splits the city in two and provides a habitat for a variety of flora and fauna.
